Articles Exercise for Classes 4 and 5 CBSE

Basic rules

Always use an article or another determiner with a singular countable noun.

Determiners are words like my, his, her, this, that and any.

You can write: a pen, the pen, my pen, this pen or any pen, but cannot write just ‘pen’.

In most cases plural and uncountable nouns can be used with or without articles.

When we are talking about someone or something for the first time, use ‘a/an’. Use ‘the’ in all subsequent references to that person / thing.

Use ‘a/an’ to mean one. Use ‘the’ with other meanings.

  • There is a man at the gate. (= There is one man at the gate.) (NOT There is the man at the gate.)
  • The man is demanding admission. (We use ‘the’ here because the listener already knows which man we are talking about – the one at the gate.)

Use ‘the’ with the names of objects belonging to our physical environment. Examples are: the sun, the moon, the star, the beach, the hill, the cloud etc.
