As, though and although grammar exercise

The words though and although are conjunctions. That means they are used to connect two clauses. They are interchangeable. Though is more common in an informal style.

Study the example sentences given below.

I worked hard.

I didn’t pass the test.

We can combine these two sentences using though or although.

Though I worked hard, I didn’t pass the test.

OR Although I worked hard, I didn’t pass the test.

To emphasize a contrast, we can use even though.

Even though I worked hard, I didn’t pass the test.

Note that even although is not possible.

The word ‘though’ can also be used as an adverb. In this case, it means ‘however’.

After an adjective or adverb, as and though can both mean ‘although’.

Angry as/though she was, she said nothing. (= Although she was angry she said nothing.)

Tired though she was, she went on working. (= Although she was tired, she went on working.)

Hot though it was, we went on playing. OR Hot as it was, we went on playing. (= Although it was hot, we went on playing.)
