How to write an effective advice letter?

Choose your words carefully when writing a letter of advice.

Respond quickly to the request for advice, but give yourself enough time to think your answer. Your advice must be useful to your reader. So it is essential that you think it thorough carefully.

Keep the tone respectful

You may have a different opinion on the subject you are asked to give advice on. You might be even critical. Nonetheless, keep the tone of your letter respectful and helpful. Don’t be judgmental. Also avoid direct or implied criticism.

Express your regret if you can’t give advice

You may not be able to give valuable advice on the given subject. If you feel that you are not in a good position to give the kind of advice the person would find helpful, make it clear and express regret. Suggest the name of a person who might be able to help.

Keep it short and simple

Keep your advice letter simple and to the point. Give advice only on the subject you have been asked about. As far as possible, avoid comments or personal opinions. Personal advice should be given only when the person has asked for it.

When someone responds to your request for advice, it is always a good idea to write a thank-you letter.
