The word the has three pronunciations. When it is followed by a word that begins with a vowel sound, the e in the is pronounced like the I in words like pit and sit.

The egg is pronounced like thi egg. The old man is pronounced like thi old man.

When the is followed by a consonant sound, the e in the is pronounced like the a in China.

Therefore, the man is pronounced like tha man.

The e in the is sometimes also pronounced like the ee in feel and peel. This pronunciation is used when we want to emphasize something.
